The "Mind the (Generation) Gap" Edition
"How do we make sure we are AI-ready for the younger Generations coming now to our workplace?
I got asked this excellent question recently in a conference. But here's the thing - I don't think this is a generational gap. And now there's data to prove it.
The chart above is from the Microsoft Work Trend Index report. The vast majority of people are bringing AI to work - which is a great start. But it also signals we are not giving them the tools they need. A story for another newsletter.
The interesting finding is - the number of people using it is pretty much the same across every Gen.
What does this mean?
For the first time in generations, we can't rely on older or younger generations to re-skill and learn. It needs to be a collective effort. We are all equally savvy. Or equally lost. At any given day.
We are a collective generation of generations - what Amy Wood calls Gen-T - Generation Transition. The generation in which the tsunami of AI hit, and the one that other generations will look back and think - they were the first ones to have this opportunity.
That's why the next finding on the same report is concerning:
If we don't enable people with tools, training and an experimentation environment...
They will continue to feel that using AI is "cheating". Is using Excel rather than a calculator today considered cheating?
They will continue bringing their AI to work. You wouldn't bring you personal Excel or Powerpoint license to work would you?
So lets get to it. We're Gen-T. All Gens on the same boat.
