The "Data Doesn't Lie" Edition

The data is in. And data doesn’t lie:

The good news: 11% of companies have adopted Gen AI at scale.

The bad ones: 89% of companies are failing to do so.

The data is from a brilliant Mckinsey article I read this week - take a look here, it's worth a read https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/mckinsey-digital/our-insights/moving-past-gen-ais-honeymoon-phase-seven-hard-truths-for-cios-to-get-from-pilot-to-scale

My hypothesis for why we are failing:

We are focusing too much on the tech, the data and the use-cases.

Not people.

So many are bringing their own AI to work (78%) because they see the value already... and they don't find the tools at work.

So now we need to focus way more on enabling people and BUILDING CAPABILITY by doing 3 things.

  1. Providing the TOOLS they need at work - choosing which ones to BUILD, BUY or BORROW.
  2. TRAINING them - get them in a room, and show them tangible examples of how they make it work for them.
  3. Creating a CULTURE of experimentation, in which they don't feel like using AI at work is cheating or doing something wrong.

And several companies are now doing it, or coming forward publicly with her efforts. During the upcoming newsletters I will share concrete examples - so we can all think what could apply to our own companies.

I believe it’s our collective priority to BUILD CAPABILITY and re-skill entire organisations.

The most urgent and important of all.

And I'm not normally this extreme. But any company that doesn’t have a capability department properly resourced or at the top of their strategic agenda... is going to be obsolete.

In months, not years.
